The Correlation Between 17th-Century Roman Canvas Supports and the Technique of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

  • The Entombment of Christ (1602–1603, Vatican Museums): One of the most technologically scrutinized works. The support is linen with a 8 x 9 threads/cm density. Despite the slight increase in density, the fiber characteristics (thickness 10-15 um) remain identical.
  • Supper at Emmaus (1601, National Gallery, London): Laboratory tests confirmed a density of 8 threads/cm2 and the presence of the brownish organic impregnation (colletta) found in the analyzed sample.

4. Conclusions:

The high degree of correlation between the technical parameters of Sample 4991/5 and the established data for Caravaggio’s Roman workshop leads to the following expert conclusions:

  1. Workshop Consistency: The sample belongs to the specific type of material known as tela romana, which dominated the Roman textile market circa 1600.
  2. Qualitative Standards: A density of 7-8 threads/cm2 was considered a „high” or prestigious standard, reserved for key commissions for families like the Mattei, Giustiniani, and Borghese.
  3. Temporal Validation: The fact that Caravaggio transitioned to coarser, diagonal weaves (tovaglia) after leaving Rome in 1606 strongly situates Sample 4991/5 within the specific window of 1595–1605 and the Roman geographical area.
